District Judge - Eighth Judicial District Court - Family Division - Department M
Amy M. Mastin was elected to the Eighth Judicial District Court, Department M, in November 2020. Her election was the culmination of a legal career devoted to Clark County families. Amy adopted Las Vegas as her home in 1996, moving here from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida immediately after graduating law school. Amy earned her undergraduate degree at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida and can still be found rooting for the Seminoles every football Saturday. She subsequently earned her juris doctorate at Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad College of Law in Ft. Lauderdale, graduating with honors despite being a single mother to an infant daughter when she started school. After transplanting herself and her daughter from Florida to Las Vegas, Amy was hired to clerk for the Honorable Gerald W. Hardcastle (retired). After two years under his mentorship, Amy entered private practice, focusing her efforts on family law-related cases: divorce, custody, guardianships, adoptions. Amy also served as a Deputy District Attorney, prosecuting juvenile dependency cases (civil child abuse and neglect) and served as a pro tem Hearing Master, learning to adjudicate those difficult cases, as well. Eventually, Amy’s experience in these fields and as a pro tem Hearing Master earned her an appointment as a full-time Domestic Violence Hearing Master, presiding over more than half of the County’s 8,000-10,000 civil domestic violence cases each year. During her seven years as a Hearing Master, Amy also presided over, minor guardianships and discovery matters and child support establishment and enforcement matters. Amy’s civic work has included volunteering for the National Battered Women’s Clemency Project and contributing to Nova Southeastern’s award-winning, civil-law clinic, representing the interests of HIV-positive clients and clients whose rights were impacted while they were wards of the Florida foster care system. Amy is honored to have the privilege of serving as your District Court Judge in Department M.
