Judge Dawn R. Throne

District Judge - Eighth Judicial District Court - Family Division - Department U

Judge Dawn Throne spent 24 years representing clients in all areas of Family Law – family law appeals, protective orders against domestic violence, divorce, custody, prenuptial agreements, post-divorce disputes, child support matters, guardianships of adults and minors, adoptions and probate.  She is one of only 43 attorneys in the State of Nevada to be certified as a Family Law Specialists. She is the only Judge in Nevada who is a Family Law Specialist. Judge Throne spent her first 9 years of practice working for two full-service law firms, which allowed her to gain valuable experience in many other areas of the law.  She has experience in civil litigation, business and commercial litigation, bankruptcy, employment law, administrative law, probate, estate and trust litigation and medical malpractice defense.  She also prosecuted misdemeanor criminal matters and defended a few clients in misdemeanor criminal matters.  For her last 12 years in private practice she and her business partner owned and managed their own law firm. Life experience has only furthered Judge Throne’s passion for law. Not only has she represented hundreds of individuals in all areas of family law, she’s been there herself. She has gone through a divorce of her own, been in a custody battle for her stepson, was a co-guardian for her great grandma and even taken on the challenge of raising teenagers. In her free time, Judge Throne enjoys spending time with her daughter, which includes a shared passion for watching the Pittsburgh Steelers play, attending Church together, singing in the Church Choir, traveling to new places and learning.  Judge Throne and her family have two rescue dogs who bring laughter and love. Judge Throne is the first Judge elected to the Family Court Division, Department U.  Since 2021, she has presided over thousands of hearings and hundreds of trials.  Since January 2024, she has been one of the two judges assigned to hear minor guardianship cases in addition to a civil domestic docket of divorce and custody cases.  She and her staff are dedicated to efficiently managing the large caseload assigned to Department U.
