Procter R. Hug Jr. - March 11, 1931 to October 17, 2019
Procter Ralph Hug Jr., born in Reno, graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1953, served as a Navy lieutenant, and earned his law degree from Stanford in 1958. He practiced law in Reno until 1977, serving along the way as a deputy state attorney general and as general counsel to the Nevada University System from 1972 to 1976.
Nominated by President Jimmy Carter in 1977, he served more than four decades on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, including as its chief judge from 1996 to 2000, taking senior status in 2002 and retiring from active service in 2017.
